Formed under Philip the Bold and passed down to his successors, John the Fearless and Philip the Good, the Library of the Dukes of Burgundy comprised no less than nine hundred manuscripts copied and illuminated by the greatest artists of the Middle Ages by the time of Charles the Bold. Les manuscrits didactiques ont été traités dans le deuxième volume, édité en 2003, tandis que les oeuvres littéraires ont fait l'objet du tome III qui a paru en 2006. De tentoonstelling Zondags Zilver toont alle aspecten van het versierde kerkboek: het vakmanschap van de zilversmeden en de boekbinders, de bijbelse en symbolische voorstellingen op de boeksloten en het gebruik in het dagelijkse leven. Ze geeft een indrukwekkend overzicht van gedrukte en rijkversierde kerkboeken in Belgie en Nederland van 1650 tot 1900. Het prachtige zilverwerk op de boeken getuigt van een verbluffend vakmanschap. De zilveren en gouden sloten en het beslag, de bewerkte boekband en de subtiel aangebrachte versiering in het goud op snee zijn stuk voor stuk een streling voor het oog. De bijna 200 tentoongestelde boeken uit de particuliere Collectie Van Noordwijk worden aangevuld met een rijke keuze aan gebedenboekjes met zilverbeslag, bewaard in Belgische verzamelingen, die de productie uit eigen land illustreren. Kerkboeken zijn gedrukte bijbels, gebedenboeken of liedbundels die gelovigen gebruikten voor hun persoonlijke devotie en meenamen naar de kerk. De boeken hebben een handig formaat en zijn persoonlijke juweeltjes; het familiewapen of de initialen van de bezitter zijn meer dan eens verwerkt in het zilveren beslag. Ouders hielden er nauwgezet de geboorte-, doop- en soms sterfdata van hun kinderen in bij of schreven een persoonlijke opdracht als het boekje werd doorgegeven aan een jonger familielid. Het Belgische luik van de tentoonstelling toont hoe verschillend de productie tussen noord en zuid wel was. De bestseller van de rooms-katholieke godsdienst, L'ange conducteur, vertaald als Den Engel bestierder, wordt veruit het meest aangetroffen onder de persoonlijke gebedenboekjes. De eerste uitgave werd in 1681 gedrukt in Luik en werd samengesteld door de jezuiet Jacques Coret. Dit gebedenboekje werd tot in de 20ste eeuw gepubliceerd en kende honderden uitgaven, voornamelijk in Frankrijk en Belgie. Nieuw! deel twee van ZONDAGS ZILVER.
