Aimé Mpane en Jean Pierre Müller DE GROTE ROTONDE VAN HET KONINKLIJK MUSEUM VOOR MIDDEN-AFRIKA. RE/STORE Afrika museum, 2022. Gebonden 265 x 210 mm, 184 pagina's, NL edition.

Aimé Mpane en Jean Pierre Müller THE GRAND ROTUNDA OF THE ROYAL MUSEUM FOR CENTRAL AFRICA RE/STORE. Africa musea, 2022. hardcover 265 x 210 mm, 184 pages, ENG edition. ISBN: 9789085868378 The Royal Museum for Central Africa was founded in 1898, but its current building was inaugurated in 1910 and is characterised by many symbols reflecting the colonial propaganda of the time. The grand rotunda, designed to serve as the museum entrance, plays host to a series of statues that are strong examples of such imagery, reflecting fundamentally racist stereotypes. Between 2013 and 2018, the RMCA underwent a major renovation that saw a substantial redesign of the permanent exhibition, with the involvement of members of the African diaspora in Belgium. A major challenge of the renovation was to demonstrate the will to decolonise a listed building that is legally protected against changes. As removal of the colonial statues was not allowed, the museum was forced to find innovative solutions, notably by inviting contemporary African artists to create installations to dialogue, contrast, and discuss with colonial messages. Congolese artist Aimé Mpane was chosen to make such an installation in the rotunda in 2018 with New breath, or Burgeoning Congo. Public reaction helped the AfricaMuseum realise that it needed to go further. Along with the creation of a second sculpture, Aimé Mpane, in co-creation with Belgian artist Jean Pierre Müller, proposed the RE/STORE project: a permanent installation of transparent veils, each bearing a contemporary message, hung in front of every statue in the rotunda. The themes addressed in this collection of veils interact with the viewer in a powerful and eloquent manner. This richly illustrated book is a compilation of texts written by renowned experts about the history of the rotunda and its statues, as well as the semantic and artistic analysis of RE/STORE, providing a full catalogue of the installations, sculptures, and veils. Angelo Turconi Sur les pistes du Congo, Congo on the Road, Stichting Kunstboek, 2014. Hardback, 335x245mm, 240p, 175 colour illustrations,
English/ French edition, Fine copy. ISBN: 9789058565082

Ann Cassiman Architectures of Belonging Inhabiting Worlds in Rural West Africa BAI. paperback, 240 pages, ill. 24,6 x 17,1 x 2 cm English text. fine condition. ISBN: 9789085865902 What is a house? What is dwelling? How can a house be a body? What does ''being modern'' mean in rural Africa? How are local and global worlds intertwined through material culture? This book reflects on the meanings of housing in West Africa by analysing vernacular architectural traditions and the related ideas and worldviews grounding these building traditions. In the West, much attention is paid to the quality of housing in terms of material comfort and durability. However, houses no longer grow organically, and are no longer layered by time, or embedded in a social community and intertwined with the natural environment. The house, and even more the interior of the house, has become an expression of the individuality of the inhabitant (witness the whole marketing of lifestyle, design, interior decoration, cocooning, etcetera). Paradoxically, though, this goes hand in hand with the erosion of the house as a signifier. Houses are becoming almost generic realities, without a memory or a past, the anonymous results of mass-production, or the interchangeable, standardized products of a globalised Ikea and turnkey culture. Many of the important phases of the lifecycles of the inhabitants no longer unfold within the house, but are evacuated to spaces external to it (hospitals, restaurants, hotels, party rooms, funeral homes, banquet halls). In contrast to the poor signifier that the Western house has become, the chapters in this book analyse the rich meanings embedded in the processes of dwelling in rural West African worlds, with a specific emphasis on Ghana and Burkina Faso. At the same time, the authors document the changes that are manifest in the material and social structures of these houses, and show the flexibility and responsiveness of traditional practices of building and dwelling when confronted with the influences of urban modernity. As such, this reflection on local architectural forms also deals with many of the challenges and issues currently facing Africa. Référence: 56973 | Prix: EUR 26.95 Ajouter au panier

Barbara Steiner , Nicole Fritz CONGO STARS Van Ditmar Boekenimport B.V., 2018. 1. Softcover, 223 pages, ENG, 300 x 225 x 25 mm, as New, illustrated in colour / b/w. ISBN: 9783960984344 Congo Stars does not attempt to trace the historic development or even deliver a definition of what popular painting in the Congo is. It is in fact much more about the dimension of fiction in the writing of its history. Processes of nation building, facets of social order or the realities of everyday life are the major themes of popular art in the Congo. Painters see themselves as reporters or chroniclers of the everyday. They tell stories and thus offer an alternative historiography, confronting the traditional colonial narrative. "Congo Stars" places these popular painters alongside artists who work with installations and conceptually with photo and film, while often tackle the same themes. Bernard de Grunne Djenne-jeno. 1000 Years of terracotta statuary in Mali. mercaterfonds - fondsmercator, 2016. Hardcover with dusjacket, 400 pages, Dimensions: 29.7x24.5, Illustrated.*** fine! ISBN: 9789061530671 The so-called Djenne statuary emerged circa a.d. 700 and flourished until A.D. 1750. The terracotta statues were manufactured by various groups inhabiting the Inland Niger Delta region of present-day Mali, centered around the ancient urban center of Djenne-jeno. These terracotta sculptures, more than 300 of which are published in this book for the first time, express a remarkable range of physical conditions and human emotions, providing the largest corpus of ancient sacred gestures of any civilization in Sub-Saharan Africa. Extensive fieldwork in Mali in 1982 led to fascinating discoveries about the function of this elegant and sophisticated ancient terracotta statuary as well as its religious and cultural significance. Djenne-jeno investigates this important and mainly unpublished corpus of terracotta statuary of one of the Mande art styles of West Africa, and traces potential connections between regions in West Africa whose artistic styles were previously thought to have developed independently. Generously illustrated with hundreds of color images, this book represents a major contribution to the study of an art form virtually unknown until a few decades ago. Featuring considerable new scholarship on over 300 ancient terracotta statues, Djenne-jeno is an authoritative volume on the history of art and religious practices in several regions of West Africa. Bernard de Grunne?s doctoral thesis on African Art, completed at Yale University in 1987, was dedicated to this topic. De Grunne is an expert in African terracotta statuary, and is at the forefront of research regarding the role of Master Hands in African styles.

Hardcover, 288 pages, ENG, 325 x 235 mm, dustjacket, 325 illustrations in full colour, New, . ISBN: 9780847845217 The first publication of the Barnes Foundation?s important and extensive African art collection. Less known is the pioneering collection of African sculpture that Barnes acquired between 1922 and 1924, mainly from Paul Guillaume, the Paris-based dealer. The Barnes Foundation was one of the first permanent installations in the United States to present objects from Africa as fine art. Indeed, the African collection is central to understanding Barnes?s socially progressive vision for his foundation. This comprehensive volume showcases all 123 objects, including reliquary figures, masks, and utensils, most of which originated in France?s African colonies?Mali, Côte d?Ivoire, Gabon, and the Congo?as well as in Sierra Leone, Republic of Benin, and Nigeria. Claude-Henri Pirat Du Fleuve Niger Au Fleuve Congo Une aventure africaine Primedia editions & Vision Publishers, 2014. Hardback, 350x250mm, 320p, throughout bw and col. illustrations
English/ French edition
. ISBN: 9789079881307
Claude-Henri Pirat, who has already authored different publications about lobi statuary or the buli master of whom he established the 'catalogue raisonne', reveals in here, from the great sculpture of west and central africa to the most usual objects, the works of art he is or has been the collector of. A great traveller, regularly visiting the african continent up to the most remote places, includes many photographs from the field in his book. Following the foreword of Anne-Marie Bouttiaux and the preface of Francois Neyt, all the texts, including the ethnographic ones are by the author and as he says to us in his prologue : ?«having finally decided to write the text myself enabled me to transgress established codes and not to limit its focus to a collection of works of art which is only one of the facets of my interest for africa, and to broaden it's content to include my discovery of this continent, of its inhabitants and its artistic production, of the art market and its actors, of the museums, and of some of the great questions that have been and still are under debate in this field, and that have fuelled in me reflections which i have taken the liberty of exposing here, through developments that have nothing to do with an anthropology, history of art or aesthetics essay.?» To this, is added an original photographic work the author has decided to undertake himself concerning the works of art presented here, whith the aim of reviving the elegant black and white sobriety. Constantine Petridis Luluwa Central African Art Between Heaven and Earth Fonds Mercator/ Mercatorfonds, 2018. Hardback, 297x245mm, 256 pages 150 bw and col. illustrations English edition. FINE! ISBN: 9789462302143 Living in the region between the Lubudi and Kasai rivers in south central Democratic Republic of the Congo, the Luluwa people are known for their creation of elaborately carved male and female figure sculptures, masks, and decorative arts Constantine Petridis draws on the first-hand accounts of numerous explorers, missionaries, colonial servants, anthropologists, and art historians who visited the region between the 1880s and the 1970s, to comprehensively situate the Luluwa's ornate art in its original environment of production and use. Through a close study of published and unpublished sources as well as museum objects and archival photographs, this book sheds new light on the historical context of one of central Africa's most spectacular artistic legacies, whose creation presumably dates back to the second half of the 19th century. This book offers a comprehensive survey of the intricate carved male and female figure sculptures of the Luluwa people of central Africa. Référence: 51197 | Prix: EUR 49.95 Ajouter au panier

d'Aimé Mpané et Jean Pierre Mülle LA GRANDE ROTONDE DU MUSÉE ROYAL DE L'AFRIQUE CENTRALE RE/STORE Afrika musea, 2022. HB, 265 x 210 mm, 184 pages, FR edition.
