La Monnaie de Paris organise la première rétrospective parisienne de l'artiste allemand Thomas Schütte qui se déploiera dans les cours et dans les espaces intérieurs. Après des études à l'Académie des Beaux-Arts de Dusseldorf où il fut élève de Gerhard Richter et Fritz Schwegler, Thomas Schütte émerge au début des années 1980 comme l'un des principaux initiateurs de la nouvelle sculpture allemande, à l'instar d'artistes comme Isa Genzken ou Hubert Kiecol. Plusieurs expositions marquantes ou retrospectives, ont permis à Thomas Schütte d'être révélé au grand public, comme en 1990, au Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, et en 1988 à la White Chapel Art Galery à Londres. Schütte trouve une traduction originale de sa réflexion sur la representation du pouvoir et la responsabilité sociale de l'art dans des maquettes d'architecture conçues comme des "modèles à penser". L'idée de monument est centrale à sa réflexion. L'oeuvre de Schütte s'exprime alors de manière plus apaisée dans les gravures, des aquarelles de fleurs et des portraits, certains intimes. Le questionnement sur l'échelle, issu du monument, demeure dans des representations de personnages, silhouttes plus grandes que nature, distantes et absorbées en ells-mêmes.

This book presents in word and image the façade of Orvieto Cathedral, the reliefs of which are considered to be among the most beautiful and powerful of the Trecento. The town of Orvieto, located half-way between Rome and Florence, played an important and strategic role in the political struggles in Italy during the latter part of the thirteenth century. Frequently the place of residence for popes and their Angevins allies, it became the seat of the Curia under Pope Nicholas IV, which brought wealth and economic growth to the community. Moreover, it enabled earlier plans for a new cathedral, initiated around 1285, to be finally realised. It was Pope Nicholas himself who laid the foundation stone of the new Duomo in 1290, and although building activity continued until well into the seventeenth century, most of the main portion of the building was complete by 1308, creating a dazzling and unique Gothic structure. The façade of the Cathedral in particular, is a masterpiece of design and relief sculpture. Its rich decorative carving is of outstanding quality and the innovative, compelling iconographic programme spreads across all four piers of the lower façade. The corpus of photographs by David Finn, taken specially for this publication, shows the skill and narrative details of this vituoso display of relief carving, while the text by Anita Fiderer Moskowitz, Professor of Art History at the State University of New York, Stony Brook, explains the building in the context of related Italian Gothic architecture, and discusses the problems and controversies regarding the design and ornamentation of the façade as well as the puzzling question as to its artistic attribution. The author also interprets the basic iconography of the sculptures and provides full descriptions for the detail images.

For De Bruyckere they symbolize not only warmth and shelter, but also vulnerability and fear. Fear that makes people crawl under blankets and vulnerability in situations related to cold, illness, disaster and war. They are the images-from Somalia, Ruanda or Kosovo-which the media show us every day: images from hotbeds of violence which cause the population to flee, to hide or to shiver from cold. Victims are wrapped in blankets. The suffering is covered. In De Bruyckere's studio, such newspaper photographs are present as quiet moments among the day-to-day memoranda. They are often images in which sadness and beauty seem to compete for attention

?« Quand on parle, de facon absolue, de l'art bourguignon, c'est de l'art du temps des grands ducs, c'est a la grande ecole sluterienne que l'on pense ?» (J. Calmette). Il est vrai que le genie de Sluter et de ses successeurs a donne a l'art de la Bourgogne et de la Franche-Comte une notoriete internationale. Cet ouvrage fait suite aux ?« Grands Imagiers d'Occident ?» qui introduisaient l'etude de la sculpture flamboyante en Europe (Prix Strasbourg), au volume sur la Champagne et la Lorraine (Prix des feuilles d'or de Nancy) et aux deux autres volumes de cette collection, consacres respectivement a la Normandie et Ile-de-France et a la Bourgogne et Franche-Comte. Les fastueux chantiers des ducs de Bourbon et de Jean de Berry ont laisse des merveilles insoupconnees dans ces regions qui, apres avoir porte quelque trois cents ans plus tot l'art roman a des sommets de rigueur, ont su laisser s'epanouir toute leur sensibilite dans les finesses de la statuaire flamboyante. Malgre l'ampleur de l'empreinte romane, l'Auvergne et le Bourbonnais n'ont pas echappe au renouveau flamboyant qui embrase l'Occident au crepuscule du Moyen Age. Plus discret qu'en d'autres regions, ce renouveau n'est pas moins profond dans les formes et les mentalites. De meme que le premier art gothique correspond au temps des cathedrales, de meme l'art flamboyant est lie au temps des Saintes-Chapelles. Celles-ci justement connaissent un succes particulier au pays des Bourbons, ou le developpement du culte de la Passion est la consequence directe de l'heritage de saint Louis. Refuge des sculpteurs francais au moment de la crise monarchique, la terre des Bourbons devient bientot un centre de rayonnement artistique. L'art du XVeme siecle est vante pour son realisme dont la Bourgogne reste la reference absolue. Pourtant un courant parallele se met en place en Auvergne et Bourbonnais grace a l'intervention de grands artistes, comme Andre Beauneveu, Jean de Cambrai, Philippe Colombe et Jacques Morel. Caracterise par son esprit de mesure, ce courant adouci connait son heure de gloire de 1480 a 1520. C'est alors qu'interviennent d'autres celebrites, comme Michel Colombe, Jean de Chartres ou encore Martin Cloitre et Benoit Bomberault. C'est le prelude de l'ecole ligerienne. Nouveau livre.
