This book presents in word and image the façade of Orvieto Cathedral, the reliefs of which are considered to be among the most beautiful and powerful of the Trecento. The town of Orvieto, located half-way between Rome and Florence, played an important and strategic role in the political struggles in Italy during the latter part of the thirteenth century. Frequently the place of residence for popes and their Angevins allies, it became the seat of the Curia under Pope Nicholas IV, which brought wealth and economic growth to the community. Moreover, it enabled earlier plans for a new cathedral, initiated around 1285, to be finally realised. It was Pope Nicholas himself who laid the foundation stone of the new Duomo in 1290, and although building activity continued until well into the seventeenth century, most of the main portion of the building was complete by 1308, creating a dazzling and unique Gothic structure. The façade of the Cathedral in particular, is a masterpiece of design and relief sculpture. Its rich decorative carving is of outstanding quality and the innovative, compelling iconographic programme spreads across all four piers of the lower façade. The corpus of photographs by David Finn, taken specially for this publication, shows the skill and narrative details of this vituoso display of relief carving, while the text by Anita Fiderer Moskowitz, Professor of Art History at the State University of New York, Stony Brook, explains the building in the context of related Italian Gothic architecture, and discusses the problems and controversies regarding the design and ornamentation of the façade as well as the puzzling question as to its artistic attribution. The author also interprets the basic iconography of the sculptures and provides full descriptions for the detail images.

Pierre Culot (1938-2011) was a Belgian ceramicist and sculptor. After training with Antoine de Vinck and English master potter Bernard Leach, he worked to build a bridge between British, Japanese and French traditions. Pierre Culot (1938-2011) était un céramiste/sculpteur Belge. Pierre Culot a été formé par Antoine de Vinck et le maître potier anglais Bernard Leach. Il appartient à la génération des céramistes des années 1950 qui ont fait de leur métier une forme d'art. L'argile qu'il a tournée, façonnée en plaques, grattée et vernie est devenue un ustensile quotidien d'une présence majestueuse. Tout au long de sa vie, il est resté fidèle à son expérience initiale de la poterie et a laissé son travail évoluer de la céramique aux formes basiques (bols, assiettes, carafes) à d'autres ?uvres plus audacieuses (vases cruciformes, calebasses, pots composites, encriers). Attaché à la beauté du geste, qu'il maîtrise à la perfection, il fait évoluer ses pièces, les faisant évoluer dans la taille et l'effet de surface, mêlant dans chacune terre crue et glaçure exubérante dans des variations uniques. Son énergie vitale irrésistible s'est nourrie au contact de la nature. Son imagination a transcendé la fonctionnalité et il s'est fondu dans le paysage avec des murs sculptés. A partir de 1967, il collecte des blocs de pierre pour créer des cicatrices minérales dans les jardins. Le rythme, la solidité et le poids de ces murs de pierre et de béton surprennent tant par leur audace que par leur humilité. Pierre Culot a laissé à la nature le soin d'achever l'?uvre. Il a conçu une douzaine de ces murs. Il a conservé cette échelle monumentale pour créer, parallèlement aux murs, de grandes sculptures de pierre, ou un mélange de brique et de granit, de brique et de brique, ou de brique et de grès. Ils sont installés dans la verdure et invitent le spectateur à pénétrer dans cet entre-deux, le vide, pour une expérience exceptionnelle. Les ?uvres de Pierre Culot expriment la dualité, le passage, la complémentarité des forces, dans un langage architectural librement interprété d'arcs, de portails et de contreforts. Ses sculptures ont également été réalisées pour des galeries et des musées (Bruxelles, Londres, Paris, Amsterdam, Luxembourg). Les tuiles de grès qu'il réunit dans de petites architectures animées sont baptisées chapiteaux, rangée de stèles, sculptures-tours, ouverture de la terre ou homme debout. Dans son ?uvre, Pierre Culot exprime avec passion son désir d'être au monde, d'être sur terre, dans la nature, seule génératrice de vie et de beauté. De nombreuses photographies en couleurs et en noir et blanc témoignent du travail de cet artiste-artisan au parcours unique et aux multiples facettes.

Both artists are characterized by their unique artistic innovations and the joy of experimentation; both strongly influenced their eras and have lost nothing of their topicality to this day. As sculptural milestones, the creations of Rodin and Arp illustrate in a vivid and exemplary way fundamental aspects in the development of modern sculpture. Rodin?s pioneering ideas and new artistic horizons for sculpture were taken up by Arp and fascinatingly developed, reinterpreted, or contrasted. Indeed, both oeuvres exhibit numerous artistic affinities and points of reference, which become a particularly revealing visual experience in this clever juxtaposition. AUGUSTE RODIN (1840?1917) led sculpture to new forms of expression, ultimately approaching Impressionism stylistically with his dynamic surface, while also under the influence of Symbolism, in terms of content. Sculptures such as The Thinker, The Kiss or The Burghers of Calais are among the icons of modernism. HANS (JEAN) ARP (1886?1966), founder of the Dada movement in Zurich, is known for his biomorphic sculptures in plaster, stone, and bronze. He sought the expression of ?organic abstraction.? His oeuvre also includes paintings, drawings, and poems.
