Cet ouvrage ne se termine pas en l'an 2000 : sur base des évolutions les plus récentes et des projets gouvernementaux élaborés tant au niveau national qu'européen, la dernière partie esquisse une image du rôle que devraient jouer les chemins de fer belges au XXIe siècle. Pas moins de 33 auteurs ont collaboré à cette publication. Ils ont exploité de nouvelles sources et travaillé sous plusieurs angles. C'est pourquoi cet ouvrage présente un nouveau panorama au lecteur, qu'il soit novice, amateur ou érudit dans le domaine ferroviaire. Naturellement, tout n'est pas encore dit. Les petites contributions sous forme d'encadré ne donnent qu'une impression partielle de certaines facettes de l'histoire du rail, qui seront peut-être abordées plus tard par des ouvrages plus détaillés. L'album célébrant les 75 ans de la SNCB n'est donc pas uniquement un aperçu global de l'histoire ferroviaire belge, mais également l'amorce d'études plus approfondies portant sur le monde passionnant du rail. Les textes sont accompagnés de plus de 300 illustrations, élément essentiel de la description. De nombreuses sources sont originaires de collections privées, encore inédites à ce jour. Ce livre n'aurait jamais pu voir le jour sans la contribution et la persévérance de nombreuses personnes. Nous pensons notamment aux auteurs, aux personnes qui ont prêté leurs archives et illustrations, aux membres du Groupe de Travail d'Histoire ferroviaire et aux collaborateurs du service Archives et Photothèque de la SNCB.

De gemeentebesturen van Laken, Strombeek, Grimbergen, Beigem en Humbeek waren onmiddellijk geïnteresseerd in de ontwikkelingsmogelijkheden die de aanleg van een lokale spoorlijn bood. Samen doen ze er alles aan om een ??lokale lijn van Laken naar Humbeek te creëren. Op 2 juli 1887 werd een concessie verleend en vanaf 14 augustus 1889 functioneerde de lijn als stoomtram. Het verbindt het ?Kanaal van Willebroek? in Humbeek met Laken, rue de Vrière (nu verdwenen) gelegen vlakbij het kruispunt van de Bockstaellaan en de rue Charles Raemaekers). In Wemmel volgde de burgemeester, graaf Engelbert van Limburg-Stirum, dit voorbeeld en startte gesprekken met de NMBS, buurgemeenten en het Ministerie van Verkeer en Waterstaat. Tussen 1890 en 1891 werd de lijn Humbeek - Laken, dankzij de persoonlijke tussenkomst van koning Leopold II, promotor van de gemeente Laken (waar hij verbleef), eerst doorgetrokken tot aan de brug van Laken en vervolgens via de Allée Verte naar het Rogierplein in Brussel.
