Godinnen van de art nouveau De vrouwen van de art nouveau zijn geen echte vrouwen. Het zijn verleidelijke halfnaakte nimfen, of juist boze en in zichzelf gekeerde heksen. Pin-upgirls of schikgodinnen. Voor vrouwen bestonden er kunstmatige tweedelingen: heilige of heks, maagd of verleidster. Dit was typerend voor het eerste decennium van de 20ste eeuw, waarin massaconsumptie, reclame, visuele uitingen en psychologische onzekerheid hoogtij vierden. En het lijkt verdacht veel op de tijd waarin wij nu leven. Op welke wijze werd de vrouw in de veranderende visuele cultuur rond 1900 ingezet? De positie van de vrouw was weliswaar in beweging, maar de emancipatiebewegingen waren eigenlijk pas net op gang gekomen. In de art nouveau kregen vrouwen als makers nog maar weinig kansen. In dit boek zijn vrouwen te zien in werk van Alphonse Mucha, Gustav Klimt, Aubrey Beardsley en René Lalique. Daarnaast is er aandacht voor vrouwelijke kunstenaars als Loïe Fuller, Sarah Bernhardt, Wilhelmina Drupsteen, Käthe Buchler en Sylvia Pankhurst. Gottfried Semper; 29. ??November 1803 ? 15. Mai 1879) war ein deutscher Architekt, Kunstkritiker und Architekturprofessor, der zwischen 1838 und 1841 die Semperoper in Dresden entwarf und baute. 1849 beteiligte er sich daran im Dresdner Maiaufstand und wurde auf die Fahndungsliste der Regierung gesetzt. Er floh zunächst nach Zürich und später nach London. Nach der den Revolutionären im Jahr 1862 gewährten Amnestie kehrte er nach Deutschland zurück. Semper schrieb ausführlich über die Ursprünge der Architektur, insbesondere in seinem Buch ?Die vier Elemente der Architektur? (1851), und war eine der Hauptfiguren in der Kontroverse um den polychromen Baustil des antiken Griechenlands. Er entwarf Werke in allen Maßstäben ? von großen städtebaulichen Eingriffen wie der Neugestaltung der Ringstraße in Wien bis hin zu einem Taktstock für Richard Wagner. Sein nicht realisierter Entwurf für ein Opernhaus in München wurde von Wagner ohne Genehmigung für das Bayreuther Festspielhaus adaptiert.
