This two-volume catalogue covers the entire collection of post-antique Italian sculpture in the Detroit Institute of Arts, ranging from early medieval to the early twentieth century. The collection of post-antique Italian sculpture in the Detroit Institute of Arts is considered among the three finest and most comprehensive outside Europe; however, this large and distinguished collection, whose formation began a century ago, has never been published in its entirety as a museum catalogue. Ranging from early medieval, pre-Romanesque stone carvings of the eighth and ninth centuries to works created more than a millennium later, the collection numbers over 350 pieces of Italian sculpture in wood, stone, terracotta, stucco, porcelain and bronze. More than half of the collection consists of sculpture from the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries (or the Early, High and Late Italian Renaissance), and approximately one-fifth dates from the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries (roughly, Italian Gothic sculpture). This volume catalogues 137 drawings by nearly one hundred artists active in the Netherlands, Germany, France, Switzerland, and Spain from the very end of the fifteenth century through 1600. Compiled by a team of twenty-two scholars, the book fully documents each of the drawings from twenty-four museums, outside of Chicago, with detailed scholarly entries and photographs of every work. Taken as a group, the drawings in this book present some of the most able draughtsmen of the period active north of the Alps. A sampling of the artists include Albrecht Durer and his contemporaries in Germany, Albrecht Altdorfer, Hans Beham, and Georg Pencz; in the Lowlands, Jan Wellens de Cock, Maerten van Heemskerck, Hendrick Goltzius, and Maerten de Vos; and from other countries, members of the Dumonstier family in France and the Swiss artists Tobias Stimmer and David Lindtmayer. The primary goal of Ludovico Carracci and the Art of Drawing is to provide a ground-breaking model for a new kind of book on Italian drawings. In 1983, Sydney Freedberg wrote a book on the three pivotal innovators in Italian painting at the turn of the seventeenth century: Caravaggio, Annibale Carracci, and the latter's cousin Ludovico Carracci (1555-1619). The dramatic intensity of Ludovico's paintings exerted a seminal influence on the direction of Italian Baroque painting. His highly individual renditions of his subjects make him one of the great interpreters of Italian art. Working in Bologna, the second city of the papal states, during the period of the Counter Reformation, Ludovico was well positioned to reshape religious painting during a period that demanded change. Ludovico was a prolific draftsman who produced over 300 extant drawings. His drawings offer the key to his artistic personality, because he conceived his original subjects and planned his dramatic compositions in these sheets. Like most Italian artists of the early modern period, Ludovico developed his ideas in drawings and began painting only after his conceptions had been finalized. Thus his drawings reveal how he thought, how his ideas changed, and which features of a composition were most important or challenging to his creative imagination. Such drawings as these have tremendous appeal to modern audiences, who are attracted by the excitement of watching the creative process in progress, rather than seeing only the painting that represents the end of that process. The Carracci have always been considered some of the most important draftsmen in Italian art, for their revival of drawing the human figure from life in the course of designing paintings. But Ludovico's drawings were not only preparatory studies for pictures. He was also an innovator in developing finished compositional drawings that were produced as works of art in their own right, made for sale to a new audience of private collectors in Bologna. This book will be indispensable for university libraries, museum libraries, and the private libraries of all scholars, dealers, and collectors with a serious interest in Italian art. Summary In Bologna, Giorgio Vasari's maniera moderna is inaugurated through the art of the goldsmith-painter Francesco Francia (c.1447-1517). Malvasia assimilates the beginning of this new era with the end of night and the crack of dawn, when never before seen colors are revealed to the eyes with extraordinary intensity. In his life of Francia, Vasari had acknowledged the role of precursor played by this Bolognese master in the history of Italian painting. By the same token, he had tarnished Francia's reputation by alleging that he had died soon after unpacking Raphael's Ecstasy of Saint Cecilia upon its arrival in Bologna. His death, Vasari insisted, was a moment of reckoning: it was then that Francia recognized his artistic inferiority and damnation with regard not only to Raphael, but also to the highest achievements of the maniera moderna. Aware of the historical validity of Vasari's account, Malvasia ?lifted? it wholesale into his Felsina pittrice, but not without bringing its author to trial by examining his biased testimony in light of the rich documentary evidence he had gathered against his narrative. Equipped with the most refined tools of forensic eloquence, seething with outrage, Malvasia is at his best in challenging Vasari's historical distortions and prejudices not only in connection with Francia, but also his disciples, Timoteo Viti (1469-1523), Lorenzo Costa (1460-1535), and Giovanni Maria Chiodarolo (1480-1530). Enoc Perez (San Juan, Puerto Rico, 1967) began a personal investigation in the nineties on a series of iconic twentieth-century architectures, which he transposed into paintings with an indefinite, sometimes dreamlike flavor: among these stands out Casa Mollino - the architect's last enigmatic and secret residence, which now houses the Museum -, visited by the painter in 2019 and the subject of the works presented here. The same house, designed by Mollino down to the smallest detail and conceived as a mirror of his worldview, was a source of inspiration for Brigitte Schindler (Munich, 1972), whose photographs intercept the mystery suspended in the rooms, the subtle connections between the objects carefully chosen and positioned by the owner. The volume includes contributions by Mario Diacono, Fulvio Ferrari, Enoc Perez and Brigitte Schindler, together with extracts from "The message from the dark room" by Carlo Mollino. Il Libro dell'Arte wordt binnen de kunst- en restauratiewereld beschouwd als het absolute standaardwerk op het gebied van de oude schildertechnieken. Het is het best bewaarde middeleeuwse traktaat over kunst en wordt vermeld in zowat alle studies over schilder- en restauratietechniek. Over Cennino d'Andrea Cennini (1360?-1427?) is maar weinig bekend. Hij zou geboren zijn omstreeks 1360 in Colle di Val d'Elsa, een stadje in de provincie Siena. Cennino leerde de beginselen van het kunstambacht bij zijn vader Andrea en trok hierna naar de werkplaats van Agnolo Gaddi in Florence, waar hij tien jaar bleef. Vanaf 1388 vinden we hem terug bij de uitvoering van de Sint-Stefanusreeks in de Sint-Lucchesekerk in de buurt van Poggibonsi. Vervolgens vestigt hij zich in Padua waar hij zijn beroemde boek schrijft. Van Il Libro dell'Arte zijn drie manuscripten overgeleverd. Deze Nederlandse vertaling berust op de oudste en meest originele versie: een afschrift uit 1437 dat gekopieerd werd door een gevangene in de Florentijnse Carcere delle Stinche. Il Libro dell'Arte is niet alleen interessant door de overzichtelijke manier waarop de schildertechnieken worden uitgelegd, maar ook vanwege de tijdgeest die uit het werk blijkt. Cennino's verfijnde nuanceringen en zijn gedegen vakkennis maken dit boek tot een uniek document dat zowel voor de hedendaagse schilders en restaurateurs als voor de kunstliefhebber veel te genieten biedt.

The collection of works by Giorgio Morandi selected by Antonio and Matilde Catanese belongs to the tradition of great Milanese collectors who had a far-sighted view of the painter, acquiring his works in the 1930s and becoming among the first to contribute to his fame. The Morandi's works in the Catanese collection are a microcosm of the artist's oeuvre, thanks to the number of works, their chronological spread covering almost all the years of the artist's activity, the techniques used to create them, their themes, their place in collecting history and, most importantly, their artistic importance, rendering the collection well suited for deciphering and understanding Morandi's work. The group includes fifteen paintings made between 1914 and 1959 and three watercolours representing the distinctive themes of his work indicated by anodyne titles: Still Life, Landscape, Flowers and, most importantly, a Self-Portrait dated 1914 by Morandi. Another integral part of the collection is the almost complete series of etchings, showing the collectors' embrace of the technique that Morandi practised in parallel to painting and that cannot be separated from it. The works have been the subject of scientific investigations, preliminary to restoration and conservation, conducted by the University of Urbino, the results of which are presented here.

Distinguished by the aesthetic quality of his works and the significance of his patrons, Benedetto da Maiano (1442-1497) is one of the most important Italian sculptors in the fifteenth century. As the teacher of Michelangelo he paved the way for the High Renaissance Sculpture. However, his importance has not yet been realized at all. The special contribution of this monograph is that it covers the entire career of this neglected artists, as far as we know it, and includes not only a study of the style and the meaning of his works but also investigates their historical and political contexts. A number of works recently discovered by the author are presented for the first time; works which did not survive in their original form are reconstructed, and the hitherto unknown patrons of many of his works are identified. The publication, consisting of a text and an illustration volume, is based upon many new documents discovered by the author concerning the life of Benedetto, his estate, the workshop inventories, the commissions of his works and the way they were realized. These documents contribute to a new picture not only of the artistic development and the social context of the artist, but as well to Florentine art in the Quattrocento in general. New book.
