Catalogue of Early Netherlandish Painting: Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium (CENP 5). The fifth volume examines all the works painted by anonymous masters. Most works of the 15th and early 16th centuries are not signed. Several of these works have not proved possible to attribute to a known painter or to a master with a provisional name. These works, labelled as anonymous, have been little studied until now, because they are in general thought to be of lesser quality, and because researchers have prioritised the study of more important masters. It is, however, becoming increasingly apparent that these reflect the ongoing production of the time in the Southern Netherlands. Beside the fact that these paintings represent the themes that enjoyed a certain popularity at the time, their study opens perspectives onto the socio-economic context and workshop practice. These paintings could be destined for a broad market and betray different working methods allowing for swift execution in several copies. Furthermore, two of these anonymous works, dating from around 1400 or a little bit later, rank amongst the rare representatives of pictorial production in the Southern Netherlands prior to the technical innovations introduced by the Flemish Primitives. This production is by convention called ?pre-Eyckian painting?.

This catalogue will accompany the Bruegel to Rubens exhibition held at the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford between 22 March and 23 June 2024. Through a selection of over 100 world-class drawings created by Flemish artists in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, an insightful and comprehensive overview will be given into how these drawn sheets were used as part of artistic practice, within or beyond the artist's studio. By revealing the drawings' function, rather than on their attribution or iconography, these sheets will become more fully understood through the eyes of contemporary readers. Identifying how and why these sheets were created will render these artworks more accessible to a wider audience. The three main essays will each deal with one of the principal functions of drawings at the time: studies (copies and sketches), designs for other artworks (paintings, prints, tapestries, metalwork, stained glass, sculpture and architecture), and finally the independent drawings. Each essay will discuss the relevant works within their functional context and compared with other related objects. Introductory chapters will focus on what precisely can be considered a drawing, including its materials, media and techniques, in addition to an attempt to explain the notion of Flanders and Flemish art. Emphasis will be placed throughout the catalogue on how Flemish artists collaborated in creating the most astonishing artworks of their time, unveiling their networks and friendships, as well as their travels across Europe, revealing their international importance. The exhibition is a partnership with the Museum Plantin-Moretus in Antwerp and will bring together for the first time the most stunning drawings from both the Ashmolean and the Plantin-Moretus collections, in addition to further loans from renowned Antwerp and Oxford institutions like the Rubenshuis and Christ Church Picture Gallery. Roelant Savery (1578-1639) behoorde tot de grote groep Vlaamse kunstenaars die omstreeks 1600, tijdens de 80-jarige Oorlog, in de Noordelijke Nederlanden terecht zijn gekomen. Daar stonden zij aan de wieg van de grote bloei van de kunst in de zeventiende eeuw. Savery was een zeer veelzijdige tekenaar én schilder, gespecialiseerd in landschappen, dierstukken en bloemstillevens. Met encyclopedische precisie beeldde hij talloze verschillende soorten af: dieren, bloemen maar ook mensen uit diverse contreien, van Boheemse boeren tot joodse gelovigen in de synagoge. Savery werd dé schilder van de uitgestorven dodo uit Mauritius. Meer dan tien jaar werkte Savery in dienst van de Habsburgse keizer Rudolf II in Praag, die hem op pad stuurde om de landschappen en mensen van zijn rijk vast te leggen. Afkomstig uit de Lage Landen moeten de watervallen in de Alpen diepe indruk hebben gemaakt op de kunstenaar. Na terugkeer in Nederland vestigde Roelant Savery zich in Utrecht, waar hij achter zijn huis een tuin aanlegde met kostbare bloemen en planten. Zo hoefde hij niet van huis te gaan om inspiratie op te doen voor zijn bloemstillevens.

The curious art of Jan van Kessel provides an intriguing lens through which to explore the intersections between craft practices, collecting, and the pursuit of natural knowledge in early modern Antwerp. The Antwerp artist Jan van Kessel the Elder (1626-1679) was esteemed throughout Europe for producing finely-wrought, miniature paintings on copper that depict a wide range of flora and fauna, exotic landscapes, and objects of natural artistry (e.g. shells, coral, precious stones). The ?natural? world presented in Van Kessel?s art was not a transparent window onto nature, however, but instead was ambitiously crafted through the artist's reappropriation of Antwerp's artistic traditions, material culture, and artisanal knowledge practices. Through a combination of wit, technical virtuosity, self-referentiality, and allusions to local art-historical lineage, Van Kessel?s paintings encourage viewers to simultaneously think about art, in terms of collecting, connoisseurship, citation, and media, and think anew about nature. This study uses Van Kessel?s art as a distinctive lens through which to examine the relationship between craft, curiosity, and the pursuit of natural knowledge in the early modern period. Each chapter situates Van Kessel within a particular context where art and natural history intersected in late seventeenth-century Antwerp. Taken together, these investigations reveal how his production responded to a unique convergence of circumstances in that city which included the growth of a popular, commercial strand of natural history, a thriving culture of art collecting and connoisseurship focused on local artists, and a burgeoning luxury industry. Van Kessel?s material and conceptual interventions into the representation of nature, such as his innovative, painted ?cabinets without drawers? and witty signatures formed from insects and snakes, enabled him to redefine the scope of natural historical illustration and negotiate the value and status of the small-format cabinet picture. Nadia Baadj is a Post-Doctoral Researcher at the Institute for Art History at the Universitat Bern. Her research focuses on intersections between art and science as well as artists' materials and techniques in the early modern period, with a particular focus on Northern Europe.
