1945 begann die Produktion des Volkswagenwerks mit einem einfach ausgestatteten Kafer (Typ 1), der noch den wirtschaftlichen Zwangen und der Materialknappheit der Nachkriegszeit unterlag. Bereits 1949 wurde diese Modellreihe durch eine Export-Limousine und zwei Cabriolets erganzt. 1950 folgte auf die ?echten? Personenwagen der Kleinbus unter der Typenbezeichnung 22. Er wurde im Verlauf seiner Geschichte in vielfaltigen Varianten ebenso erfolgreich wie der Kafer. Da gegen Ende der 1950er-Jahre die Anspruche an Autos weltweit gestiegen waren, entschloss sich Volkswagen 1961, mit dem VW 1500/1600 auch in die sogenannte Mittelklasse einzusteigen. Neu war bei diesem Typ auch ein Variant-Modell, das vielfaltige Nutzungsmoglichkeiten bot.
Einen weiteren Schritt zu mehr Komfort vollzog das Unternehmen 1968 mit dem Produktionsstart des VW 411. Mehr Platz fur die Insassen, mehr Leistung und mehr Komfort waren die Verkaufsargumente fur diesen Volkswagen. Vor allem aber erreichte sein Besitzer auch mehr Prestige. Ihm zur Seite gestellt wurde 1969 der mit Porsche gemeinsam entwickelte Mittelmotor-Sportwagen VW Porsche 914, der fur Volkswagen ein vollig neues Marktsegment darstellte, allerdings immer noch mit dem Antrieb auf die Hinterrader und dem luftgekuhlten Boxermotor.
