Het Koninklijk Museum voor Midden-Afrika werd opgericht in 1898, maar de officiële opening van het huidige gebouw vond pas in 1910 plaats en werd gekenmerkt door vele symbolen die de koloniale propaganda van die tijd weerspiegelen. De grot0e rotonde, ontworpen als ingang van het museum, herbergt een reeks standbeelden die sprekende voorbeelden zijn van de tijdsgeest en de stereotypen met fundamenteel racistische inslag. Tussen 2013 en 2018 onderging het KMMA een uitgebreide renovatie waarbij de permanente tentoonstelling grondig werd heringericht, met de hulp van leden van de Afrikaanse diaspora in België. Een belangrijke uitdaging bij deze renovatie was het doel een gebouw te dekoloniseren dat als beschermd monument is geklasseerd en bijgevolg wettelijk niet kan worden verbouwd. Aangezien de oorspronkelijke beelden niet mochten worden verwijderd, was het museum gedwongen dit te doen op een originele manier. Het stelde met name voor aan hedendaagse Afrikaanse kunstenaars om installaties te creëren die een dialoog, een contrast en een discussie aangaan met de koloniale symbolen. De Congolese kunstenaar Aimé Mpane werd geselecteerd om vanaf 2018 een dergelijk werk te realiseren in de rotonde. Hij creëerde Nieuwe Adem of Ontluikend Congo, maar het AfricaMuseum begreep als snel dat het, om tegemoet te komen aan zijn publiek, een stap verder moest zetten. This book reflects on the meanings of housing in West Africa by analysing vernacular architectural traditions and the related ideas and worldviews grounding these building traditions. In the West, much attention is paid to the quality of housing in terms of material comfort and durability. However, houses no longer grow organically, and are no longer layered by time, or embedded in a social community and intertwined with the natural environment. The house, and even more the interior of the house, has become an expression of the individuality of the inhabitant (witness the whole marketing of lifestyle, design, interior decoration, cocooning, etcetera). Paradoxically, though, this goes hand in hand with the erosion of the house as a signifier. Houses are becoming almost generic realities, without a memory or a past, the anonymous results of mass-production, or the interchangeable, standardized products of a globalised Ikea and turnkey culture. Many of the important phases of the lifecycles of the inhabitants no longer unfold within the house, but are evacuated to spaces external to it (hospitals, restaurants, hotels, party rooms, funeral homes, banquet halls). In contrast to the poor signifier that the Western house has become, the chapters in this book analyse the rich meanings embedded in the processes of dwelling in rural West African worlds, with a specific emphasis on Ghana and Burkina Faso. At the same time, the authors document the changes that are manifest in the material and social structures of these houses, and show the flexibility and responsiveness of traditional practices of building and dwelling when confronted with the influences of urban modernity. As such, this reflection on local architectural forms also deals with many of the challenges and issues currently facing Africa.

The so-called Djenne statuary emerged circa a.d. 700 and flourished until A.D. 1750. The terracotta statues were manufactured by various groups inhabiting the Inland Niger Delta region of present-day Mali, centered around the ancient urban center of Djenne-jeno. These terracotta sculptures, more than 300 of which are published in this book for the first time, express a remarkable range of physical conditions and human emotions, providing the largest corpus of ancient sacred gestures of any civilization in Sub-Saharan Africa. Extensive fieldwork in Mali in 1982 led to fascinating discoveries about the function of this elegant and sophisticated ancient terracotta statuary as well as its religious and cultural significance.
